R19/09 Rumensin and Milk Protein: more than meets the eye.

Rumensin is a rumen modifier used in over one quarter of New Zealand’s dairy herd, for improving health and productivity. It does this by specifically modifying rumen bacteria to deliver more energy and milk production efficiency from every mouthful of feed. Common uses include control of ketosis, improvement in body condition, improvement in milk solids production and as an aid in the control of bloat.

New data highlights significance of production-robbing disease.

Sub clinical ketosis (SCK) is a disease that affects a significant proportion of the NZ dairy herd but it is not always in the form of the obvious “downer cow”.  During the 2009 calving period, New Zealand experienced a weather pattern that was reported to be one of the best on record, yet an Elanco commissioned study of 57 farms nationwide revealed that SCK is still prevalent in the majority of herds post calving.
